Metrans: Combined Transport needs more than recognition

COMBINED TRANSPORT NEEDS MORE THAN RECOGNITION

Recognizing combined transport as a transport mode in its own right is an important step. But recognition only matters if it leads to better conditions in practice.

For me, that means focusing on several concrete priorities:

✅ more and better-quality train paths for intermodal freight
✅ harmonized European rules for combined transport operations
✅ continued investment in modern and efficient transshipment terminals
✅ compatible data systems that make cross-border operations simpler and more efficient

These are not abstract policy goals. They directly affect capacity, reliability, and the ability of operators to plan and grow across Europe.

This is why the CT4EU campaign matters. It gives the intermodal sector a platform to move the discussion from recognition to practical action.

At METRANS, we see every day what works and where unnecessary barriers still remain.

If Europe wants combined transport to become a stronger part of its freight system, the next step is clear: create the conditions that allow it to operate efficiently across borders.
